WORKING METHOD
From the initial ideas to the new festival edition: the preparations take around 15 months. During various phases, we work closely with (inter)national artists, designers, architects and partners to realize the artworks especially for Amsterdam.
Call for Concepts
The Call for Concepts marks the begining of the preparations for a new festival edition. The Call for Concepts is a public, worldwide submission call for creative light art concepts within a set theme.
Curation & Selection
Together with our team of curators, a professional, independent jury makes a selection out of the submitted concepts. Some of the criteria used are, for example, the artistic choices, the relevance regarding the theme, and the technical feasibility.
Co-creation
Once the final selection of artworks is made, the development and construction phase begins (fully financed by the festival). Under the guidance of a team of curatorial and technical professionals, the artists work towards the exhibition in Amsterdam.
Showtime (December - January)
The new edition premieres in Amsterdam. For a number of weeks the artworks are exhibited in the historic centre of Amsterdam. At the same time, the new Open Call is released for next year's edition.
The international collection
After the festival has come to an end, some of the artworks will be added to the internationally traveling collection, which is managed by Light Art Collection. Their team is actively engaged througout the year in finding new exhibition possibilities to make sure the artworks and artists get a spotlight in cities all over the world.
